New York City              (4)

The next day we started at Rockefeller Centre to get our tickets for the NBC Studio Tour. Since there was about a three-hour wait before our tour, we visited the Top of the Rock. Top of the Rock is a 3-tiered observation deck on the 67th through 70th floors of Rockefeller Centre. The first two levels have a low wall with large glass screens, which enable you to get great views and photographs; there are reasonable sized gaps between the glass to enable cameras to get a clear shot. The top viewing deck has no screens, just walls and a fantastic view of Manhattan.

Travel tip: Following recommendations of friends who have visited New York, we chose Top of the Rock instead of Empire State Building. The lines for Top of the Rock are much shorter (there was virtually no line), the panoramic views are supposed to be better, and you get a great view and photo of the Empire State Building.

The NBC Studio tour started with a short video about NBC’s early days of radio and transition into television. Then we were off on an hour journey visiting many famous studios from the Dr. Oz show, NBC Nightly News with Brain Williams and Saturday Night Live. Though no photos were allowed, the tour was enlightening to learn how the shows are filmed but the highlight was the SNL studio. Fred Armison, Taran Killam, Kenan Thompson and the SNL band were rehearsing a song for the show later that night. The tour ended with taking pictures of families behind a news anchor desk and two volunteers getting to read a news script while being taped, which were all available, of course, for purchase. Overall, the tour was great but a little pricy at $24 for an adult.

The rest of the day was spent getting ready (I have a wife and four daughters so this took a while) and attending a wedding. It was exciting spending time with friends and watching our good friends’ daughter, who we have known since she was a little girl, take her vows, transitioning her to the next phase of her life.

Congratulations Penelope and Andy
